Wireless college classes: pull the plug??

Having taught classes in which students whipped out their laptops, I’d say about 20% were using their computers for class-related activities; the rest were sending e-mails, Instant Messaging, surfing the net, etc., etc.  Some college professors are catching on, according to The Christian Science Monitor, and figuring out that those involved students are not involved with class work.  The way I see it is that if the professor is discussing something that is not going to be on an exam or help to complete a graded assignment, why on earth would a student bother: another obvious indication that students are in school to get trained.  Pretty expensive training I’d say since you could probably get trained just as well on the net; why go to college in the first place?  You need that degree on your resume?  Maybe not.  Here is the full article about pulling the plug on laptops from the Monitor.
