Advertising on the Web: Advertisers think they think

One component of propaganda is to assert that you alone know the secret to life’s critical problems. In web advertising, there are so many companies that cliam they are the source of this information, someone must be wrong. Here is what a professional advertiser had to say in a recent Washington Post article about what people know about web advertising:

We’re one step beyond bearskins and knives with Web advertising,”* says Paul Palumbo of AccuStream Research, a download media research firm. “The beauty of the Internet is that you learn pretty quickly what the audience will tolerate.”

I don’t particularly like the tenor of this observation, however, since I think it would be better if one did not spend time figuring out what information people will “tolerate.”
