If only I could die temporarily: self-abuse and mutiliation among college students

A new phenomenom is being recognized among Ivy League college students: the tendency to self-mutilate by cutting, burning, hitting one’s head against the wall.  Such behaviors were primarily thought to exist in ‘borderline personality disorders’ or autistic children, but it is estimated that 20% of academically inclined college students are doing it.  Why?  Pressure, stress, alienation, spiritual malaise, to make the private agony public?  a cry for help?  The release of endorphins to alleviate anxiety and depression?  All these are possible reasons.  There is one thing evident.  There is no technological solution to this problem.  I would hazard a guess and state that journal writing, art therapy, acting, are all good ways to channel such emotions.  In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn our hero wishes he could ‘die temporarily’ so people would feel sorry for him.  Such was his feelings of being unappreciated.  Is this becoming an epidemic?  CNN reported the story on June 5th here.
