What one 20-something British blogger is doing and why it’s important
For a change of pace from book reviews, here is a blog review–a blog I stumbled upon. Ouch! Those USB wires need to be tamed a bit. In any case, Claire’s blog is a good example of the personal blog. I didn’t pick it because it is the blog of all blogs (as if there could be such a thing) but because it is both unique to and similar to other personal blogs. You will note Claire is enthusiastic about particular music, photography, and art. You might like her tastes or not, but that’s not important. What is important is that the personal blog in general may develop (if it hasn’t already) into a significant tool we use in developing our personal identities, sort of providing a window for the world to see how we look at the world. In the past, we had a “template” media universe, protected and often controlled by agenda setters; now there is so much information, so many sources of media that one can create his or her own persona through making a contribution to what was once the ‘media hegemony.’ Is this a good thing? I believe so. In the future, blogging is a form of personal development wherein we allow the world into our own private world. By being a record of who we are now, as we keep blogging, and as we keep changing, the blog can give us a way of reviewing our personal histories and understand ourselves better than previous generations because we have the opportunity to record our develoment easily, creatively, and supportively. Personal blogging is becoming as important in our developmental process as trying out new friends, new ideas, and new places as we wend our way forward in our attempts to find out what is important to us or to paraphrase Joseph Campbell, as a means of recording our attempts at following our own bliss.
