The rise of the DVD and the sophistication of visual literacy has created a new form of media analysis and criticism that you should know about if you are a visual artist or performing artist. It’s the commentary track on the DVD of the movie you just rented or purchased. If you want to get a moment by moment analysis of cinematography, art direction, lighting, acting, the structure of screenplays, the function of the various professionals who are involved in the filmmaking process, try watching (and listening) to the commentary after you see the movie. The commentaries vary in quality but I’ve never heard a bad one. Some have been a bit mediocre, but certainly not as bad as the worst of film criticism from on-line movie sites by self-proclaimed film critics or paid ones for that matter. I’ve often played the commentary section two or three times while only seeing the movie of the commentary once. I won’t rank order them in terms of quality at the moment, but it’s in the works. Meanwhile, you could do no better than the commentaries that are recorded on two very different movies: Donnie Brasco and Waltz with Bashir (an Israeli animated documentary). Donnie Brasco, starring Johnny Dep and Al Pacino has a brilliant analysis by the film’s director, while Waltzing with Bashir has an equally brilliant analysis by its director. Take a look at the Amazon links and reviews for these two movies. They are both extremely cheap; you’ll get a master class in making a traditional feature film with Donnie Brasco, and another master class on creating a full-length feature animation with Waltz with BashirDonnie Brasco
